About the Band

The NJW All-Star Jazz Orchestra is directed by Matt Niess and is an audition based ensemble open to music students in the Washington, DC area. The mission of NJW is to offer the highest level of instruction to young jazz musicians while promoting America's Art form, Jazz. NJW employs educators and artists dedicated to helping students reach their potential as musicians and individuals. If you have questions please email Matt Niess.

Audition Information

Live auditions for the 2015-16 season will take place Saturday September 10 & Sunday September 11 from 1000am-2:00pm or as needed at George Mason University. Video submissions will also be accepted in place of a live audition. Videos or YouTube submissions will be accepted beginning 7 September and ending 11 September. Applicants must send the link or video (and password if needed) to Matt Niess. Be sure you receive a confirmation email that your application link was received. To schedule a live audition please email Matt Niess.

The audition video must contain the posted materials below and as an option one or two examples of jazz improvisation (with play-a-long track or live rhythm section) or anything else prepared that demonstrates your abilities. The video must be unedited (within selections) and contain no special affects or mixing. Please include all contact information in the email with the link to your audition post. Improvisation is strongly recommended but not necessary.

Calendar

Fees

The fee is $500 per season. 2016-2017 will consist of two seasons September-January and late January into the Spring. Participants who win a chair in September can pay for both seasons or vacate their chair at the conclusion of the first season. Auditions for the second season will be scheduled as needed. Addition fees will be required for the trip to New OrLeans and other potential travel.

Rehearsal Information

The NJW All-Star Band will rehearse most Sundays 1:00-4:00pm or 12:00-3:00pm TBA at George Mason University (Main Fairfax Campus) in the DeLaski Music Building in the Choral Room and sometimes the Band Room. This building backs the Center for the Arts at GMU. We will follow the campus protocol for weather cancelations. Click here to visit the campus website. http://today.gmu.edu/announcements/

Attendance Policy

School performances come first and we will work with you to make things work for everyone. You are expected to attend all events that do not conflict with school performances. Communicate with your band director, teachers, parents, and everyone involved. All conflicts will be looked at individually, please be proactive with your calendar. Communication is key.

Performances

Performances will include various venues with guest artists featuring arrangements and compositions of prominent artists. Travel to jazz festivals, music conventions, and overnight trips are expected. Field trips to concerts and clinics with artists are also expected. Additional expenses may be necessary.
